Culturally Relevant Reading Engagement Program (CRREP)
A Tier 3 Literacy Intervention for Grades 6–8
CRREP is a complete 8-week structured literacy intervention I designed for the 200+ students reading three or more grade levels below benchmark at Johnnie L. Cochran Jr. Middle School. The program addresses what i-Ready alone cannot: building reading identity, restoring authentic engagement, and centering students whose cultures and communities have been historically underrepresented in school texts.
Grounded in 10 peer-reviewed sources spanning culturally sustaining pedagogy (Gay, Paris & Alim), adolescent reading motivation (Webber et al.), and vocabulary intervention research (Black & Wright, Lupo et al.), the program delivers a daily 45-minute block built from five segments — fluency warm-up, explicit vocabulary, guided reading, discussion-based comprehension, and exit ticket — across eight thematic weeks from Identity & Reader Engagement to Synthesis & Celebration.
The full project includes weekly lesson templates, curated text sets featuring authors like Sandra Cisneros, Jason Reynolds, and Elizabeth Acevedo, vocabulary routines, a structured student-choice system, five progress-monitoring tools, comprehensive differentiation for English Learners and IEP students, and a teacher implementation guide with a 90-minute PD session — all measured against four outcome categories: engagement, vocabulary acquisition, reading-level growth, and reading identity.
